Urad dal or uddina bele chutney

Uddina bele chutney or urad dal chutney recipe explained with step by step pictures and a video. Uddina bele chutney or urad dal chutney is prepared using urad dal, coconut, red chili, curry leaves, tamarind and salt. Uddina bele chutney or urad dal chutney is a very tasty chutney goes very well with dosa or idli.

You can serve this chutney with dose or idli or rice roti. But I personally prefer this chutney with unde kadubu or pundi gatti. You can serve this chutney with hot steaming rice too.

I learnt this chutney recipe from my mother. Roasting urad dal until golden brown under low-medium flame is very important to prepare tasty chutney. So take care not to burn it.

urad dal chutney recipe

Preparation time: 10 min
Cooking time: 5 min
Serves: 4

Ingredients: (measuring cup used = 240ml)

  1. 3/4 - 1 cup grated coconut
  2. 2 - 3 red chillies
  3. 4 tsp urad dal
  4. 4 - 5 curry leaves or 1/4 tsp coriander seeds
  5. A small marble sized tamarind
  6. 1/2 tsp cooking oil
  7. Salt as per your taste

Ingredients for tempering:

  1. 2 tsp cooking oil
  2. 1 red chilli
  3. 1/4 tsp mustard seeds
  4. Big pinch asafoetida

Instructions for making urad dal chutney:

  1. Take a frying pan, add 1/2 tsp oil, red chilli and urad dal. Fry until urad dal turns slightly brown.fry urad dal and red chilli for urad dal chutney
  2. Add in curry leaves or coriander seeds, fry for a while and switch off the stove.fry curry leaves for urad dal chutney
  3. Grind grated coconut, fried urad dal, fried curry leaves or coriander seeds, fried red chilli, salt and tamarind using required water.grind urad dal chutney
  4. Temper it with oil, red chilli, mustard seeds and asafoetida. Serve it with dosa or idli.tempering urad dal chutney
