Gorikai kara or cluster beans curry recipe explained with step by step pictures. Gorikayi kara gojju or cluster beans curry is prepared using cluster beans, onion, tomato, coconut and few other spices. This gojju or curry can be used as an accompaniment with rice, roti or chapathi.

This recipe is from my friend Sushma, who lives in Mysore. This is a very tasty and healthy recipe. I have already posted Gorikai rice bath recipe, which is prepared using cluster beans and vangi bath powder. Cluster beans is familiar by different names like gorikayi or chavalikai (Kannada), guar(Hindi, marathi and punjabi), gokarakaya(Telugu) and kotthavarai(Tamil). Gorikai kara recipe

Preparation time: 10 min
Cooking time: 15 min
Serves: 4

Ingredients: (measuring cup used = 240ml)

  1. 250gm cluster beans
  2. 1 big onion
  3. 2 big tomato
  4. 2-4 green chilies
  5. 2 cloves garlic
  6. A pinch of turmeric powder
  7. 3-4 doddapatre or ajwain leaves (optional)
  8. 1/4 cup grated coconut
  9. 1 tbsp chopped coriander leaves (optional)
  10. Salt as per your taste

Ingredients for tempering:

  1. 1/2 tsp mustard seeds
  2. 1/2 tsp jeera or cumin seeds
  3. 5-6 cloves garlic crushed
  4. 3-4 curry leaves
  5. 4 tsp cooking oil

Instructions for making gorikai kara or cluster beans curry:

  1. Wash, discard the ends and chop the cluster beans into 2cm length pieces. Also chop onion and tomatoes.chopped cluster beans for gorikayi kara or cluster beans curry
  2. Take chopped cluster beans, tomato, onion, green chilies, 2 cloves of garlic, turmeric powder and salt in a pressure cooker.chopped cluster beans, onion and tomato for gorikayi kara or cluster beans curry
  3. Cook the vegetables by adding little water and by making 2 whistles.cooked vegetables for gorikayi kara or cluster beans curry
  4. Wait until cooked vegetables are cool. And then transfer it to a mixie jar. Also add in grated coconut.chopped cluster beans for gorikayi kara or cluster beans curry
  5. Grind until smooth or coarse paste. I like it to be smooth.grinding cluster beans for gorikayi kara or cluster beans curry
  6. Prepare tempering in a frying pan using oil, mustard seeds, cumin seeds, curry leaves and crushed garlic.grinding cluster beans for gorikayi kara or cluster beans curry
  7. Add in ground vegetables from step 5(cluster beans, tomato, green chilies and onion).grinding cluster beans for gorikayi kara or cluster beans curry
  8. Bring it to boil. Add in coriander leaves (optional). Adjust the salt. Mix well and switch off the stove.boiling gorikayi kara or cluster beans curry
