Banana chips or balekai chips recipe explained with step by step pictures. This is a plain salted banana chips prepared using raw banana, salt and turmeric powder. Banana chips or balekayi chips is very easry to prepare and is very tasty.

This type of yellow banana chips is popular as "Kerala banana chips" but it is also popular in Karavali and Malnad region of Karnataka. In Karnataka apart from this yellow or plain salted banana chips, red chili spiced and pepper spiced banana chips are also in practice. They are the spicy version of banana chips, which I will share with ypu all soon. This is my first post using "raw banana", however you can find "banana halwa recipe" on our website, which is prepared using ripened banana.

Banana chips is familiar by name "balekayi chips" in Karnataka. Where balekai or balekayi translates to "raw banana" in Kannada language. This banana chips is a very simple recipe with very minimum ingredients. And home made snacks are healthy and safe as compared to store bought ones. Banana chips recipe

Preparation time: 15 min
Cooking time: 10 min
Serves: 2

Ingredients: (measuring cup used = 240ml)

  1. 2 big raw bananas
  2. 1/2 tsp salt
  3. 1/4 tsp turmeric powder
  4. 4 tbsp water
  5. Oil to deep fry

Instructions for making banana chips:

  1. Take fresh raw bananas or balekayi. you can take any raw banana. I have used nendra banana or nendra balekayi. The banana should be raw but not tender.raw banana for banana chips or balekai chips
  2. Now apply little oil to your fingers and peel the banana using a knife. After peeling immerse the peeled banans in water having normal temperature.peeled bananas for banana chips or balekai chips
  3. Next in a bowl prepare salted turmeric water by adding salt, water and turmeric powder.salted turmeric water for banana chips or balekai chips
  4. Heat oil in a deep frying pan and slice the banana directly into the hot oil if possible. Or alternately slice the banana using a slicer. If do not have the slicer try to make thin and even slices using a knife.slicing raw banana for banana chips or balekai chips
  5. Next drop the banana slices one by one into the hot oil.frying banana slices for banana chips or balekai chips
  6. Next add in around 1/2 tsp of salted turmeric water over the chips. The oil will start sizzling with more bubbles. Do not worry, it is perfectly normal.salted turmeric water for banana chips or balekai chips
  7. Within no time sound as well as bubbles will subside. Flip the chips using spatula. When the bubbles are completely stopped take out the chips using a dep frying spatula. Enjoy crispy, homemade, tasty chips with a cup of tea and enjoy.frying banana chips or balekai chips
