Halasina kayi happala or raw jack fruit papad recipe explained with step by step pictures. Halasina kayi happala is very very tasty. Raw jack fruit is steam cooked, mashed, pressed and sun-dried to prepare tasty halasinakai happala. I have just used chili and salt in these papads. If you wish you can add any any other spices like cumin seeds, asafoetida and sesame seeds.

Halasinakayi happala or jack fruit papad is very popular and very common in malnad and Karavali region of Karnataka. Generally people will prepare these papads in large quantity during summer and use it through out the year. There it rains heavily for 4 - 5 months. Then winter starts and they all will be busy with farming and harveting. After that when summer starts they will start preparing various papads and fryums. It will be fun making papads at home, especially if you have kids.

It is not very easy to prepare raw jack fruit papad. Mashing the cooked jack fruit is a tiresome job. You need to put lot of strength to do that. I took these pictures from my native. Me and my Mother together prepared these papads during my visit in summer holidays. I have already shared sweet potato papad, which is another tasty papad recipe you can easily prepare. Halasinakai happala or jack fruit papad

Preparation time: 1 hour + 2 days to dry
Cooking time: 30 min
Serves: 10 no

Ingredients: (measuring cup used = 240ml)

  1. 1 medium sized raw jack fruit
  2. 4 - 5 green chili or 2 tsp red chili powder
  3. 4 tsp cooking oil
  4. Salt as per your taste
  5. 2 small polythene sheets
  6. 1 big polythene sheet or cotton cloth

Instructions for making halasinakai happala or jack fruit papad:

  1. Cut and clean the raw jack fruit. Remove the seeds and all extra unwanted portions. Please note that the jack fruit should not be tender and should not be ripened also. It should be about to get ripened.cleaned raw jack fruit for halasina kayi happala or jack fruit papad
  2. Steam cook the raw jack fruit until soft. It will take around 30 minutes.steam cooking jack fruit for halasina kayi happala or raw jack fruit papad
  3. Now crush green chili and salt in the grinding stone. You can do it using a mortar-pestle also. You can use any spices of your choice.green chili and salt for halasina kayi happala or raw jack fruit papad
  4. Next add in steam cooked raw jack fruit and mash it well using a wooden pestle.steam cooked jack fruit for halasina kayi happala or raw jack fruit papad

  7. Take a small polythene sheet, grease it with oil, place a ball and cover it with another small polythene sheet, which is also greased.press mashed jack fruit for halasina kayi happala or raw jack fruit papad

  10. Flip the pressed papad on a big polythene sheet and takeout the small polythene sheet carefully.sun dry pressed halasina kayi happala or raw jack fruit papad
  11. Continue and finish pressing all the papads. Keep them out for drying under the sun. After 3-4 hours flip the papads carefully. Allow papads to dry in the sun for 1 - 2 days. Fry them in oil or in the oven.sun dry pressed halasina kayi happala or raw jack fruit papad
