Avarekalu uppittu or avarekalu upma recipe explained with step by step pictures. Avarekalu uppittu or upma is a very healthy breakfast item. Avarekalu uppittu is prepared using rava, avarekalu, onion, tomato and few other spices.

Avarekalu is very healthy and is very tasty. Now avarekalu or field beans season is going on. I have posted many recipes using avarekalu like avarekalu saru, avarekalu akkirotti, avarekalu mixture and avarekalu usli recipes.

This is normal uppittu or upma recipe with avarekalu as an additional ingredient. I love avarekalu. I will be waiting for the season and prepare as many recipes possible. It is healthy and is good to consume in the winter. I always prefer using seasonal vegetables and fruits.

Avarekalu uppittu recipe

Preparation time: 10 min
Cooking time: 20 min
Serves: 3

Ingredients: (measuring cup used = 240ml)

  1. 1/2 cup medium rava or semolina
  2. 1.25 cup water
  3. 1/2 cup avarekalu or filed beans
  4. 1/2 tsp mustard seeds
  5. 1 tsp urad dal
  6. 1 tsp bengal gram dal or chana dal
  7. 1 onion
  8. 1 medium sized tomato
  9. 2 - 3 green chili
  10. 4-5 curry leaves
  11. 1 tsp finely chopped ginger
  12. 1/4 tsp turmeric powder
  13. 6 - 8 tsp cooking oil
  14. 1 tsp salt (or as per your taste)
  15. 2 tsp chopped coriander leaves
  16. 1/4 cup fresh grated coconut

Instructions for making avarekalu uppittu:

  1. To begin with cook the avarekalu and keep it aside.cooked avarekalu for avarekalu uppittu or upma
  2. Next roast the rava by adding a tsp of ghee or oil and keep it aside.roasting rava for avarekalu uppittu or upma
  3. Chop onion, tomato and ginger. Slit green chilies. Keep all other ingredients handy. chopped onion and tomato for avarekalu uppittu or upma
  4. Heat oil in a big wide frying pan. Add in mustard seeds. When mustard seed splutters add in urad dal and chana dal (gram dal). Keep the stove on medium flame.tempering for avarekalu uppittu or upma
  5. When the dal turns brown add in curry leaves, chopped ginger, slit green chilies and chopped onion.green chili and ginger for avarekalu uppittu or upma
  6. Fry until onion turns soft under medium flame.roasting onion for avarekalu uppittu or upma
  7. Add in chopped tomato and saute for a while.tomato for avarekalu uppittu or upma
  8. Add in salt and turmeric powder. Fry until tomatoes are soft.salt and turmeric for avarekalu uppittu or upma
  9. Add in cooked avarekalu.cooked avarekalu for avarekalu uppittu or upma
  10. Add in 1.25 cup of water (For 1 cup rava 2.5 cup water). The amount of water may vary slightly depending on the thickness of rava. Wait until the water comes to rolling boil. boiling water for avarekalu uppittu or upma
  11. Gradually add the roasted rava by stirring continuously. roasted rava for avarekalu uppittu or upma
  12. Within no time it will become thick.cooking avarekalu uppittu or upma
  13. Close the lid and allow it to cook for 2 minutes under low flamemaking avarekalu uppittu or upma
  14. Add in grated coconut and chopped coriander leaves. Mix it well. Switch off the stove and serve.coconut and coriander leaves for avarekalu uppittu or upma
