Karnataka style rave uppittu or rava upuma recipe explained with step by step pictures and a video. rave uppittu or rava upma is a very popular, very common and very simple breakfast item from South India. And almost everybody knows how to make rava upuma or rave uppittu but this post is for people who are just learning cooking and we just wanted to have this popular recipe on our website.

In Karnataka it is popular by name uppittu or upuma and in Mangalore region it is popular by name sajjige uppittu. Rava is called as rave in kannada language. In Karnataka uppittu or upma is prepared using either fine rava or coarse rava or rice rava or vermicelli or rice. You can find vermicelli upma or shavige uppittu, Godi kadi uppittu or broken wheat upma, akki uppittu or rice upma and Navane uppittu or foxtail millet upma recipes on this website. Mixed vegetable upma is also very popular in Karnataka. I will post that recipe soon. Even though rava uppittu or rava upuma is extremely popular, there are people who loves this so much and there are some people who hates it as well. Anyway I like it very much. Since its very nutritious, if you like it or not dont forget to include in your diet. You can also try rave rotti or sajjige rotti.

This rave uppittu or rava upuma is served along with rava kesari bath in hotels and during some special events to make the breakfast rich.

Upma or uppittu recipe varies from region to region through out South India. The differences are in the colour and the quantity of water used. Follow this recipe to prepare tasty and full proof upma or uppittu.

Rave uppittu or rava upma recipe

Preparation time: 10 min
Cooking time: 15 min
Serves: 3

Ingredients: (measuring cup used = 240ml)

  1. 1 cup medium rava / sooji / semolina
  2. 2.25 cups water
  3. 1/2 tsp mustard seeds
  4. 1 tsp urad dal
  5. 1 tsp bengal gram dal / chana dal
  6. 1 big onion (1 tsp sugar + a pinch of asafoetida if not using onion)
  7. 1-2 green chili
  8. 5-6 curry leaves
  9. 1 tsp finely chopped ginger
  10. 1/4 tsp turmeric powder
  11. 4-5 tsp cooking oil
  12. Salt as per your taste
  13. 2 tbsp chopped coriander leaves
  14. 1/2 cup fresh grated coconut
  15. 1 tsp lemon juice (optional)

Instruction for making rave uppittu:

  1. Chop onion, ginger and coriander leaves, slit green chilis and keep all other ingredients ready and handy. Take water and salt in a vessel and bring it to boil under low flame. Water will take few minutes to boil and in this time gap start preparing the upma or uppittu. Because we need the boiling water only at the end.ingredients and water for rave uppittu or rava upma
  2. Now to prepare upma take oil, mustard seeds, urad dal and chana dal in a large frying pan and heat it. When the mustard seed splutters add in slit green chilis, curry leaves, chopped ginger and onion. Fry them till the onions are soft under medium flame. tempering and frying onion for rave uppittu or rava upma
  3. When onions turn soft, add 2 cups of rava, turmeric powder and continue frying for 5 more minutes under medium flame. frying rava for rave uppittu or rava upma
  4. By now water will be boiling and pour the boiling water to the pan little by little. Mix well till it absorbs all the water. It will take hardly 1 minute.adding water to the rava to make rave uppittu or rava upma
  5. Close the lid and allow it to cook for 3 to 4 minutes under low flame. Then open the lid add grated coconut, lemon juice and chopped coriander leaves and mix well. Close the lid again and switch off the stove. After a minute, mix again and serve it hot with sugar or curd or pickle. adding coconut and coriander leaves for rave uppittu or rava upma
