Thambuli or thambli is a quick gravy recipe and are served as first course in a multi-course meal. Coconut and curd (yoghurt) are the two main ingredients in all thambuli recipes.

On the other day, I was so surprised when my mother-in-law was picking hibiscus flowers to use in her cooking. Within 10 minutes she prepared a tasty thambuli or thambli out of it. Again to my surprise it was so yummy and everyone liked it.

Dasavala or hibiscus thambuli recipe

Preparation time: 10 min
Cooking time: 5 min
Serves: 4

Ingredients: (measuring cup used = 240ml)

  1. 10 - 12 dasavala or hibiscus flowers
  2. 1/2 cup grated coconut
  3. 1/4 tsp mustard seeds
  4. 1 cup curd / yoghurt
  5. Salt as per your taste

Ingredients for tempering:

  1. 1 red chilli
  2. 1/4 tsp mustard seeds
  3. 2 tsp cooking oil

Instructions for dasavala thambuli:

  1. Pick fresh dasavala or hibiscus flowers. White flowers are preferred. Wash them carefully and pat dry.fresh hibiscus flowers for dasavala thambli
  2. Separate the petals. Make sure there are no insects or worms in the petals.clean hibiscus flowers for dasavala thambli
  3. Chop it finely.chop hibiscus flowers for dasavala thambli
  4. Squeeze the chopped petals using hands. Add in salt.mash hibiscus flowers for dasavala thambli
  5. Grind coconut and 1/4 tsp mustard seeds using required water.grind coconut for dasavala thambli or tambli
  6. Add in ground coconut and curd to the squeezed hibiscus petals. Mix well.curd for dasavala thambli or tambli
  7. Now take a small frying pan and prepare tempering using red chilli, mustard seeds and oil. Add this to the hibiscus thambuli or raita. Serve it with hot rice.tempering for dasavala thambli or tambli
