Southekayi sippe chutney

Southekai sippe chutney or sambar cucumner peel chutney recipe explained with step by step pictures and video. This southekayi sippe chutney is prepared using yellow cucumber peel, coconut, fried red chilli and fried urad dal. Southekayi sippe chutney is very tasty and goes very well with rice, dosa or idli.

Yellow cucumber or sambar cucumber is peeled while preparing southekayi sambar, southekayi dal, southekayi kadubu and majjige huli kind of gravies. So instead of throwing the peels, prepare this very very tasty chutney.

Southekayi sippe chutney

Preparation time: 10 min
Cooking time: 5 min
Serves: 4

Ingredients: (measuring cup used = 240ml)

  1. Peel from 1 medium sized southekayi or sambar cucumber
  2. 1/4 - 1/2 cup grated coconut
  3. 1 - 2 red chili
  4. 2 tbsp urad dal
  5. 1/4 tsp coriander seeds
  6. 1/4 tsp mustard seeds
  7. A small marble sized tamarind
  8. 2 tsp cooking oil
  9. Salt as per your taste

Ingredients for tempering:

  1. 2 tsp cooking oil
  2. 1 red chili (optional)
  3. Few curry leaves
  4. 1/2 tsp mustard seeds

Instructions for making Southekayi sippe chutney:

  1. Wash and peel the southekayi or sambar cucumber. Cut the peels into 2cm pieces.Wash and peel the cucumber for southe sippe chutney
  2. Heat a frying pan. Add in oil, coriander seeds, red chilli, mustard and urad dal.fry urad dal and red chilli for southe sippe chutney
  3. Fry until urad dal turns golden brown. Set it aside.fry urad dal and red chilli for southe sippe chutney
  4. In the same frying pan, add 2 tsp oil and chopped cucumber peels.fry cucumber peel for southe sippe chutney
  5. Fry until the peels are brown and cooked.fry cucumber peel for southe sippe chutney
  6. Wait until fried ingredients are cool. Add in coconut, salt and tamarind.ingredients for grinding southe sippe chutney
  7. Grind until fine by adding required water.ingredients for grinding southe sippe chutney
  8. Temper it with oil, curry leaves and mustard seeds. Serve it with hot steaming rice or dose.tempering cucumber peel chutney
