It is prepared using thin beaten rice, coconut, rasam powder, salt and jagegry. You can prepare this avalakki upkari or thin poha recipe for breakfast or as an evening snacks.

I would say this is one beginner or bachelor recipe. You can serve this avalakki upkari along with curd or banana or kadale usli or uppittu. It tastes so good with home made thick curd.

Avalakki upkari recipe

Preparation time: 10 min
Cooking time: 5 min
Serves: 2

Ingredients: (measuring cup used = 240ml)

  1. 2 - 3 cup thin beaten rice or avalakki or poha
  2. 1/2 cup grated coconut
  3. 2 - 3 tbsp jaggery
  4. 2 tsp rasam powder
  5. Salt as per your taste

Ingredients for tempering: (measuring cup used = 240ml)

  1. 1/2 tsp mustard seeds
  2. 1/2 tsp urad dal
  3. 1 red chili
  4. 4 - 5 curry leaves
  5. 2 tsp coconut oil or cooking oil

Ingredients for spice powder (if not having rasam powder):

  1. 3 red chillies
  2. 2 tsp coriander seeds
  3. 1 tsp cumin seeds

Instructions for making avalakki upkari recipe:

  1. In a wide bowl, take grated coconut, jaggery and salt.coconut, jaggery and salt for avalaki upkari or spicy thin poha snacks
  2. Add in rasam powder.rasam powder for avalaki upkari or spicy thin poha snacks
  3. If you don't have rasam powder, roast and powder the ingredients listed under "for spice powder".spices for avalaki upkari or spicy thin poha snacks
  4. Squeeze and mix the coconut, jaggery, salt and rasam powder very well using hands.mixing coconut, jaggery and rasam powder for avalaki upkari or spicy thin poha snacks
  5. Add in thin beaten rice (poha) or avalakki.thin beaten rice for avalaki upkari or spicy thin poha snacks
  6. Rub and mix it well using hands. You need to rest this for 5 - 10 minutes.mixing avalaki upkari or spicy thin poha snacks
  7. Meanwhile prepare tempering using oil, mustard seeds, broken red chili, urad dal and curry leaves. Pour it over the avalakki.tempering for avalaki upkari or spicy thin poha snacks
  8. Give a quick mix and serve it. You can serve it along with banana or curd or kadale usli or upma.serving avalaki upkari or spicy thin poha snacks
