Menthe hittu or menthya powder recipe explained with step by step pictures and video. Menthe hittu or menthya powder is a most flavorful, very tasty and healthy recipe. Menthe hittu is prepared using gram dal, urad dal, moong dal, toor dal, wheat, rice, coriander seeds, cumin seeds, methi seeds and turmeric. Menthe hittu is a traditional recipe from Karnataka.

Menthe hittu or menthya pudi is a very healthy recipe. I have added cumin seeds in this recipe, which you can replace it with 1/4 tsp asafoetida. Also I have not added any chillies here. If you wish you can add few red chillies or 1/2 tsp black pepper. Menthe hittu recipe

Preparation time: 5 minutes
Cooking time: 15 min
Serves: 1.5 cup

Ingredients: (measuring cup used = 240ml)

  1. 1/2 cup gram dal or kadlebele
  2. 1/4 cup urad dal or uddinabele
  3. 1/4 cup moong dal or hesarubele
  4. 1/4 cup toor dal or togaribele
  5. Little less than 1/4 cup wheat (or broken wheat)
  6. 2 tsp rice
  7. 1 tsp coriander seeds
  8. 3/4 tsp methi seeds
  9. 3/4 tsp cumin seeds
  10. 1/4 tsp turmeric
  11. Salt as per your taste

Instructions for making menthe hittu:

  1. Take all the ingredients as per the measurement.ingredients for menthe hittu recipe or menthya chutney powder
  2. Heat a frying pan and roast gram dal or chana dal until golden brown under medium flame. Once done take them out and set it aside.roasting gram dal for menthe hittu recipe or menthya chutney powder
  3. Followed by add in moong dal. Roast moong dal until light brown under medium flame. Once done take them out and set it aside.roasting moong dal for menthe hittu recipe or menthya chutney powder
  4. After that add in toor dal. Roast toor dal until golden brown under medium flame. Once done take them out and set it aside.roasting toor dal for menthe hittu recipe or menthya chutney powder
  5. To the same pan, add in urad dal. Roast urad dal until golden brown under medium flame. Once done take them out and set it aside.roasting urad dal for menthe hittu recipe or menthya chutney powder
  6. Next add in broken wheat. Roast broken wheat until whitish under medium flame. Once done take them out and set it aside.roasting broken wheat for menthe hittu recipe or menthya chutney powder
  7. Finally add in remaining 4 ingredients like rice, coriander seeds, cumin seeds and methi seeds. Fry them all until rice turns whitish under low flame.rice, methi, cumin and coriander for menthe hittu recipe or menthya chutney powder
  8. Once done, switch off the stove. Add in turmeric and give a quick mix.turmeric for menthe hittu recipe or menthya chutney powder
  9. Add in all other previously fried ingredients. Give a quick mix and let it cool.fried ingredients for menthe hittu recipe or menthya chutney powder
  10. Add in salt as per your taste. I have added around 1 spoon of salt.salt for menthe hittu recipe or menthya chutney powder
  11. Once they are cool, transfer them into a mixie jar and grind until fine powder. Store it in an airtight container. You can serve it with hot rice along with ghee.grinding for menthe hittu recipe or menthya chutney powder
  12. You can also prepare gojju. For that take powder, salt, tamarind and jaggery in a bowl. Prepare a thin paste by adding required water.gojju using menthe hittu recipe or menthya chutney powder
  13. Temper it with oil, mustard, red chilli, curry leaves and asafoetida.menthe hittina gojju using menthe hittu recipe or menthya chutney powder
