Akki kadubu and simple saru recipe explained with step by step pictures and a video. This is a very tasty and a pocket friendly recipe. You just need to have very minimum ingredients for this recipe. The akki kadubu is prepared using rice, water and salt. No other ingredients are used. You can serve it with either chutney or sambar or rasam.

This recipe is an improved easy version of unde kadubu or pundi gatti, which I have posted long ago. I have also added one simple side dish along with the recipe.

This akki kadubu is a very healthy recipe and will not cause any digestion related issues. I have used sona masoori rice in this recipe and I have used 2.5 times water. You can use any rice of your choice but you may have to adjust the water quantity.

Akki kadubu and simple saru recipe

Preparation time: 8 hours + 10 min
Cooking time: 30 min
Serves: 3

Ingredients: (measuring cup used = 240ml)

  1. 1 cup rice (I have used sona masoori)
  2. 2.5 cups water (more or less depending on rice quality)
  3. Salt as per your taste

  1. 2 medium sized tomatoes
  2. 2 tbsp grated coconut
  3. 1 small gooseberry sized tamarind
  4. 1 tsp jaggery
  5. 1 tsp salt (as per your taste)
  6. 1 green chili
  7. 2 tbsp finely chopped coriander leaves
  8. A big pinch of turmeric powder

Ingredients for tempering:

  1. 1 red chilli
  2. 1/2 tsp mustard seeds
  3. 1/2 tsp cumin seeds
  4. A pinch of asafoetida
  5. 5 - 6 curry leaves
  6. 2 tsp cooking oil

Instructions for making akki kadubu and simple saaru:

  1. Take rice and rinse it well.rice for akki kadubu and simple saru recipe
  2. Drain the water completely and spread it on a cloth or plate.rinsed rice for akki kadubu and simple saru recipe
  3. Wait until dry. I leave it overnight.dried rice for akki kadubu and simple saru recipe
  4. Once it is dry, coarse grind it using a mixer grinder. Just run the mixie for few seconds. The consistency should be like rice rava or idli rava. Keep it aside.home made rice rava for akki kadubu and simple saru recipe
  5. Next boil the water in a wide pan along with salt.boil water for akki kadubu and simple saru recipe
  6. When it starts boiling add in rice rava gradually by stirring continuously using a flat spatula. Stirring continuously is very important to avoid lumps.rice rava for akki kadubu and simple saru recipe
  7. Keep stirring continuously for a minute or until thin paste. Switch off the stove.stirring the batter for akki kadubu and simple saru recipe
  8. Grease the plates. I have used thatte idli plates. You can use any other plate or idli plate also.dough for akki kadubu and simple saru recipe
  9. Pour the batter into the greased plate and level it.batter in plates for akki kadubu and simple saru recipe
  10. Steam cook it for 15 minutes under medium flame. The time may vary depending on the quantity. steaming akki kadubu and simple saru recipe
  11. Chop and grind the tomatoes along with coconut by adding required water.tomato for simple tomato rasam or saru
  12. Transfer it to a container. Add in salt and keep it for boiling.salt for simple tomato rasam or saru

  19. Prepare tempering using oil, mustard, cumin seeds, red chilli, asafoetida and curry leaves. Add this tempering to the rasam or saaru.tempering for easy rasam or simple tomato saru
