This is a very easy tasty chutney recipe and it can be served with either dosa or idli or rotti or rice. This quick chutney or tomato onion chutney is prepared using tomato, onion, garlic, rasam powder, red chilli powder, salt, jaggery and a tempering.

This tomato-onion chutney is a very easy and quick chutney recipe and you can prepare this chutney in just 5 minutes. You can serve this chutney for breakfast along with dosa, idli or rotti. You can also serve this with rice. This can even be a tasty base to the north Indian curries. Try this and I am sure you will love it.

Tomato onion chutney recipe

Preparation time: 10 min
Cooking time: 15 min
Serves: 4

Ingredients: (measuring cup used = 240ml)

  1. 3 medium sized tomatoes
  2. 1 medium sized onion
  3. 2 cloves of garlic
  4. 1/2 tsp rasam powder
  5. 1/2 tsp red chilli powder
  6. Jaggery as per taste
  7. Salt as per your taste

Ingredients for tempering:

  1. 2 tbsp cooking oil
  2. 1 red chili
  3. 1/2 tsp mustard seeds
  4. 4 - 5 curry leaves
  5. A big pinch of turmeric powder
  6. A big pinch of asafoetida

Instructions for making tomato onion chutney:

  1. Take garlic in a mixie jar. Please note, garlic is optional and you can skip it if you don't want.garlic for tomato onion chutney or red chutney
  2. Add in chopped tomato.tomato for tomato onion chutney or red chutney
  3. Add in chopped onion.onion for tomato onion chutney or red chutney
  4. Add in rasam powder, red chilli powder, salt and jaggery.rasam powder, red chilli powder, salt and jaggery for tomato onion chutney or red chutney
  5. Grind it into a semifine paste. Set it aside.ground tomato and onion for tomato onion chutney or red chutney
  6. Heat 2 tbsp oil in a pan. Add in mustard seeds and red chilli. Wait until mustard seeds splutter.tempering for tomato onion chutney or red chutney
  7. Add in curry leaves turmeric and asafoetida.tempering for tomato onion chutney or red chutney
  8. Reduce the flame and add in ground tomato onion paste. Give a quick mix and bring it to boilground tomato onion paste for tomato onion chutney or red chutney
  9. Close the lid and cook under low flame.cooking tomato onion paste for tomato onion chutney or red chutney
  10. Adjust the salt and jaggery level if needed.salt and jaggery for tomato onion paste for tomato onion chutney or red chutney
  11. Cook until it leaves the oil and switch off the stove. Serve it with dosa or rice or idli.boiling tomato onion chutney or red chutney
