Beans sambar or huralikayi huli recipe explained with step by step pictures and a video. Beans or hurulikayi sambar is prepared using french beans, toor dal and fresh ground masala. This is a very tasty sambar recipe using beans and goes very well with rice.

Beans is a very haelthy, tasty and easy to handle vegetable. I have posted 2 more tasty recipes using beans like beans palya and beans carrot palya recipes. Do try them as well.

The Karnataka cuisine is so rich that there are so many varities of sambar recipes. Actually the sambar recipe varies from region to region, family to family and the type of vegetables used. I prepare this type of beans sambar regularly and it tastes very good.

Please note, that I have marked jaggery as optional ingredients. So depending on your taste adjust jaggery and tamarind. Adjust the salt and water quantity also as per your choice.

Beans sambar recipe

Preparation time: 5 min
Cooking time: 30 min
Serves: 4

Ingredients: (measuring cup used = 240ml)

  1. 1/4 kg french beans
  2. 1/4 cup toor dal
  3. 1/4 tsp turmeric powder
  4. 2 tsp crystal salt (or as per your taste)
  5. 1/2 tsp jaggery (optional)
  6. Small marble sized tamarind
  7. 1 tbsp coriander leaves

Ingredients for masala: (measuring cup used = 240ml)

  1. 1/2 cup grated coconut
  2. 2 - 4 red chillies
  3. 1 tsp urad dal
  4. 2 tsp coriander seeds
  5. 1/2 tsp jeera or cumin seeds
  6. 7 - 8 fenugreek seeds
  7. 1 tsp cooking oil

Ingredients for tempering:

  1. 1 red chilli
  2. 5 - 6 curry leaves
  3. 1/4 tsp mustard seeds
  4. A pinch of asafoetida
  5. 1 tsp cooking oil

Instruction for making beans sambar:

  1. Pick, remove the fibres, rinse and chop the beans.
  2. Take toor dal in a pressure cooker and rinse.toor dal for beans sambar recipe or huralikayi huli
  3. Add in turmeric powder, few drops of oil and required water. Cook the dal until soft.cooking dal for beans sambar recipe or huralikayi huli
  4. Now to the same cooker add in chopped beans, 1 tsp salt and required water. Close the lid and cook until soft.cooking vegetabes for beans sambar recipe or huralikayi huli
  5. Take all the ingredients listed under "for masala" like red chili, urad dal, coriander seeds, cumin seeds and fenugreek seeds as per the measurement.spices for beans sambar recipe or huralikayi huli
  6. Heat a frying pan and roast the red chillies, urad dal, coriander seeds, cumin seeds and fenugreek seeds under low medium flame using a tsp of oil. Fry until dal turns brown but take care not to burn any of them.fried spices for beans sambar recipe or huralikayi huli
  7. Grind roasted spices and grated coconut using a mixer grinder. Use required water and grind until smooth.grinding masala for beans sambar recipe or huralikayi huli
  8. Once the vegetables are cooked, add in salt as per your taste.salt for beans sambar recipe or huralikayi huli
  9. Add in tamarind extract.tamarind for beans sambar recipe or huralikayi huli
  10. Then add in jaggery as per your taste.jaggery for beans sambar recipe or huralikayi huli
  11. Followed by add in ground masala into the cooker, which has cooked beans and dal.ground masala for beans sambar recipe or huralikayi huli
  12. Add in required water, mix well and bring it to boil. Add in coriander leaves and switch off the stove.boiling beans sambar recipe or huralikayi huli
  13. Temper it with oil, red chili, mustard seeds and curry leaves. Serve tasty beans sambar with hot rice.tempering beans sambar recipe or huralikayi huli
