Masala rice recipe explained with step by step pictures and a video. Masala rice is a very easy and quick hotel style one pot meal recipe. Masala rice is prepared using rice, ghee, ginger-garlic, onion, tomato, capsicum, potato, geen peas and few other spices. This an instant pot recipe using Geek Robocook. You can prepare this masala rice and enjoy it as a breakfast or light dinner.

You can find many chitranna recipes like no-onion chitranna recipe, easy mango rice, nellikai chitranna, mavinakayi chitranna and avalakki chitranna recipes.

I have used electric pressure cooker (Geek Robocook) in this recipe which is a instant pot. However you can prepare this recipe using regular pressure cooker also.

Masala rice recipe

Preparation time: 10 min
Cooking time: 30 min
Serves: 2

Ingredients: (measuring cup used = 160ml)

  1. 1 cup rice (I have used sona masuri)
  2. 3 cups water
  3. 2 tbsp ghee or cooking oil
  4. 1/2 tsp cumin seeds
  5. 1 bay leaf
  6. 7 - 8 cloves
  7. 2cm length cinnamon
  8. 1 star anise
  9. 1 cardamom
  10. 1 tsp ginger-garlic
  11. 1 onion finely chopped
  12. 1/2 capsicum chopped
  13. 2 large tomatoes finely chopped
  14. 1/4 tsp turmeric powder
  15. 1/2 - 1 tsp red chilli powder
  16. 1/2 - 1 tsp pav bhaji masala
  17. 1 Potato, peeled and cubed
  18. 2 - 3 tbsp fresh green peas
  19. 2 tbsp coriander leaves
  20. Salt as per your taste

Instructions for making masala rice recipe:

  1. To begin with rinse and soak the rice for 10 minutes.rice for masala rice recipe using instant pot
  2. Switch ON the electric presssure cooker and choose "saute" mode. You can use regular pressure cooker as welloil and peanuts for masala rice recipe using instant pot
  3. Next add in ghee or oil.tempering for masala rice recipe using instant pot
  4. Add in dry spices like cumin seeds, bay leaf, cloves, cinnamon, star anise and cardamom.curry leaves for masala rice recipe using instant pot
  5. Folowed by add in ginger garlic paste (or chopped ginger garlic).onion for masala rice recipe using instant pot
  6. Also add in chopped onion and capsicum. Saute until onions turn translucent.asafoetida and turmeric powder for masala rice recipe using instant pot
  7. Add in chopped tomatoes and fry them for few seconds.tomatoes for masala rice recipe using instant pot
  8. Add in turmeric, red chilli and pav bhaji masala powder. Continue frying until tomatoes turn mushy.salt for masala rice recipe using instant pot
  9. Add in potatoes and green peas.water for masala rice recipe using instant pot
  10. Also add in rice and coriander leaves. Give a quick mix.cooking tomato for masala rice recipe using instant pot
  11. Add in 3 cups of water. Adjust the water based on the type of rice used.sambar powder for masala rice recipe using instant pot

  13. Cancel the saute mode and select the pulao/Biriyani mode. Close the lid. You can use regular pressure cooker as well. Make 2 whistles if it is regular cooker.coriander leaves for masala rice recipe using instant pot
