Khichdi recipe explained with step by step pictures and a video. This is a very tasty and easy light dinner recipe. This khichdi can be prepared as a breakfast also. Khichdi is prepared using moong dal (hesarubele), rice, onion, tomato, ginger, ghee, green chilli and few other spices. This is a very tasty and healthy light dinner recipe and can be prepared in very less time. I have prepared this khichdi using rice, which can be replaced with rice or broken wheat.

Khichdi recipe

Preparation time: 10 min
Cooking time: 30 min
Serves: 3

Ingredients: (measuring cup used = 240ml)

  1. 1/4 cup moong dal or hesarubele
  2. 1/4 cup rice
  3. 1 tsp ghee
  4. 1 bay leaf
  5. 1/2 tsp cumin seeds
  6. 1/2 tsp chopped ginger
  7. Few curry leaves
  8. 1 green chilli
  9. 1 small onion finely chopped
  10. Big pinch turmeric powder
  11. Big pinch asafoetida
  12. 1 small tomato chopped
  13. Some coriander leaves
  14. Salt as per your taste

Instructions for making oats khichdi recipe:

  1. To begin with soak rice and moong dal for 20 minutes. In that time, chop all the vegetables.moong dal and rice for khichdi recipe or moong dal kichdi
  2. Heat ghee in a pressure cooker. Prepare tempering using cumin seeds and bay leaf.ghee for khichdi recipe or moong dal kichdi
  3. Add in finely chopped ginger, curry leaves and slit green chilli.ginger, green chilli and onion for khichdi recipe or moong dal kichdi
  4. Also add in chopped onion. Fry everything together for a while.pepper and turmeric for khichdi recipe or moong dal kichdi
  5. Add in turmeric and asafoetida. Fry everything together until onions turn soft.pepper and turmeric for khichdi recipe or moong dal kichdi
  6. Add in chopped tomato and fry until toamtoes turn soft. You can add little water if needed.tomato for khichdi recipe or moong dal kichdi
  7. Drain the water and add in soaked rice and moong dal. Fry for few seconds.moong dal for khichdi recipe or moong dal kichdi
  8. Add in 2 cups of water and salt.water for khichdi recipe or moong dal kichdi
  9. Give a quick mix, Close the lid and cook by making 3 - 4 whistles.cooking khichdi recipe or moong dal kichdi
