10 minute quick sambar recipe

Quick onion sambar recipe explained with step by step pictures and a video. This sambar can be prepared in very less time without any vegetables. This quick sambar is prepared using onion, tomato, few spice powders and a tempering. This is a tasty and easy sambar for rice or breakfast (tiffin).

Other than onion and tomato, I have not used any vegetables in this sambar. I have not cooked toor dal in this recipe. Instead I have used roasted gram or hurigadale. Also I have added jaggery in this recipe. You can adjust salt, tamarind and jaggery also as per your taste.

Quick onion sambar recipe

Preparation time: 5 min
Cooking time: 20 min
Serves: 3

Ingredients: (measuring cup used = 240ml)

  1. 2 tomatoes
  2. 2 tbsp roasted gram or hurigadale
  3. 1 large onion
  4. 1 tsp red chilli powder
  5. 1 tsp dhaniya or coriader powder
  6. 1/4 tsp garam masala powder
  7. Big pinch turmeric powder
  8. Salt as per your taste
  9. 1 tsp jaggery (optional but recommended)
  10. One marble sized tamarind
  11. Some coriander leaves

Ingredients for tempering:

  1. 1 red chili
  2. 1/2 tsp mustard seeds
  3. 1/2 tsp cumin seeds
  4. Big pinch of asafoetia
  5. 5 - 6 curry leaves
  6. 2 tbsp cooking oil

Instruction for making quick onion sambar:

  1. Grind tomato and roasted gram into a fine paste by adding required water.tomato and roasted gram for quick onion sambar recipe
  2. In a kadai or deep frying pan, prepare tempering using oil, mustard seeds, cumin seeds, red chilli and curry leaves.tempering for quick onion sambar recipe
  3. Wait until mustard and cumin seeds splutter. Add in asafoetida and curry leaves.asafoetida and curry leaves for quick onion sambar recipe
  4. Next add in thinly sliced onion and fry until soft.onion for quick onion sambar recipe
  5. Followed by add in red chilli powder, dhaniya powder, garam masala powder and turmeric powder. Fry everything together for a while.spice powders for quick onion sambar recipe
  6. Add in ground tomato and roasted gram paste. tomato paste for quick onion sambar recipe
