Rava pongal or rave huggi recipe explained with step by step pictures and a video. Rava pongal is very similar to Karnataka style kara pongal or huggi anna. Pongal is a popular breakfast recipe in karnataka. This rava pongal is very easy to prepare and healthy breakfast.

Karnataka style kara pongal is familiar as "huggi anna". This kara rave pongal is prepared using spices so that it does not require any accompaniment to eat. Rava pongal recipe

Preparation time: 10 min
Cooking time: 45 min
Serves: 3

Ingredients: (measuring cup used = 240ml)

  1. 1/2 cup medium rava or upma rava
  2. 1/4 cup mung dal or hesaru bele
  3. 1 tbsp ghee
  4. 1/2 tsp mustard seeds
  5. 1/2 tsp jeera or cumin seeds
  6. 1 tsp crushed pepper
  7. 8 - 10 cashews
  8. 1-2 green chili
  9. 1 tsp finely chopped ginger
  10. 8 - 10 curry leaves
  11. Big pinch of turmeric powder
  12. Big pinch of asafoetida
  13. 2 tbsp grated coconut
  14. Salt as per your taste

Instructions for making rava pongal:

  1. Roast mung dal or hesarubele until slightly brown and you get a nice aroma. Do not over roast it.roast mung dal for rava pongal recipe or rave huggi
  2. Take the roasted dal in a pressure cooker and rinse. Add in a cup of water (4 times the dal) and cook until soft.rinse dal for rava pongal recipe or rave huggi
  3. Cook by making 3 - 4 whistles. Make sure that the dal is cooked until soft but not mushy.cook dal for rava pongal recipe or rave huggi
  4. Fry rava until nice aroma under medium flame by adding a tsp of oil. Set it aside.roast rava for rava pongal recipe or rave huggi
  5. Heat ghee in a deep frying pan. Add in mustard and cumin seeds.ingredients for rava pongal recipe or rave huggi
  6. Wait until mustard seeds splutter. Then add in chopped ginger, crushed black pepper, cashews, green chillies and curry leaves. Fry for few seconds.ingredients for rava pongal recipe or rave huggi
