Dal fry recipe explained with step by step pictures and a video. This is a very easy recipe using togari bele or toor dal. This is a very tasty hotel style side dish for chapati or rice. This dal fry is prepared using toor dal, onion, tomato, ginger, garlic, green chilli, red chilli powder, garam masala, curry leaves and few other ingredients.

This is a perfect recipe when you are running out of vegetables. Nevertheless it is very healthy, tasty and easy to prepare. Kids will enjoy this simple, nutritious yet tasty dal. I have used ginger garlic paste in this recipe, which you can replace it with chopped ginger and garlic. Or if you don't like garlic, you can just skip it. You can find one no-onion and no-garlic dal recipe on this website.

Dal fry recipe

Preparation time: 5 min
Cooking time: 20 min
Serves: 2 cup

Ingredients: (measuring cup used = 240ml)

  1. 1/2 cup toor dal
  2. 1/2 tsp mustard seeds
  3. 1/2 tsp cumin seeds
  4. 1 onion chopped
  5. 7 - 8 curry leaves
  6. 1 green chilli
  7. 1 tsp ginger garlic paste
  8. 1 tomato chopped
  9. 1/4 tsp turmeric
  10. 1 tsp red chilli powder
  11. 1/2 tsp garam masala powder
  12. 1 tsp salt (or as per your taste)
  13. 1 tbsp cooking oil
  14. 1 tbsp coriander leaves

Instructions for making dal fry:

  1. Rinse toor dal.toor dal for dal fry recipe
  2. Add in a cup of water, few drops of oil and big pinch of turmeric.cooking dal for dal fry recipe
  3. Cook until soft by making 3 - 4 whistles.cooked dal and chilli for dal fry recipe
  4. Heat a tbsp of oil. Prepare tempering with mustard seeds and cumin seeds.tempering for dal fry recipe
  5. Next add in chopped onion, green chillies and some curry leaves. Fry until onions turn soft.green chillies, onion and curry leaves for dal fry recipe
  6. Next add in ginger garlic paste (or chopped ginger and garlic). Give a quick mix.ginger garlic paste for dal fry recipe
  7. Followed by add in chopped tomato. Fry until tomatoes are soft.tomato for dal fry recipe
