Jeerige chitranna recipe explained with step by step pictures and a video. This is very tasty sweet, spicy and sour chitranna or rice recipe. This cumin rice masala is prepared by grinding coconut, cumin seeds, red chillies, salt, jaggery and tamarind. A big fat tempering with oil, peanuts, mustard, dals, turmeric and curry leaves also added.

Jeerige chitranna recipe

Preparation time: 10 min
Cooking time: 30 min
Serves: 3

Ingredients: (measuring cup used = 240ml)

  1. 1 cup rice (I have used sona masuri)
  2. 1/2 cup grated coconut
  3. 3 - 5 red chillies
  4. 2 tsp cumin seeds
  5. 1 gooseberry sized jaggery
  6. 1 gooseberry sized tamarind
  7. Some coriander leaves (optional)
  8. Salt as per your taste

Ingredients for tempering:

  1. 2 tbsp ground nut
  2. 1 tsp mustard seeds
  3. 1 tsp urad dal
  4. 1 tsp chana dal or gram dal
  5. 1 spring of curry leaves
  6. 1/4 tsp turmeric powder
  7. 2 tbsp cooking oil

Instructions for making jeerige chitranna:

  1. Cook the rice and keep it aside. The rice should be cooked until soft but not mushy.cooked rice for jeerige chitranna recipe or cumin rice recipe
  2. Take coconut, red chillies and cumin seeds in a mixie jar.grinding masala for jeerige chitranna recipe or cumin rice recipe

  4. Use required water and grind it into a fine paste. Set it aside.ground masala for jeerige chitranna recipe or cumin rice recipe
  5. In a wide frying pan heat oil and fry the peanuts.peanuts for jeerige chitranna recipe or cumin rice recipe
  6. Once done, add in mustrad seeds, urad dal and gram dal (chana dal). Fry until mustards splutter and dals turn brown.tempering for jeerige chitranna recipe or cumin rice recipe
