Eerulli saaru or onion rasam recipe explained here with step by step pictures and video. This is a very easy, tasty and simple saaru or rasam recipe prepared using onion, garlic, red chillies, coriadner seeds, cumin seeds, salt, jaggery, tamarind, coriander leaves, turmeric and a simple tempering. Eerulli saaru is a no dal, no tomato and no rasam powder rasam or saru recipe.

I have posted many rasam recipes like huruli saaru or horse gram rasam, udupi tomato rasam, Dodapathre(ajwain) leaves rasam, mango rasam, sabsige soppu (dill leaves) rasam, menthe huli or fenugreek seeds rasam, hesaru bele saaru or mung dal rasam and upsaaru recipes.

Eerulli saaru or onion rasam recipe

Preparation time: 5 min
Cooking time: 10 min
Serves: 4

Ingredients: (measuring cup used = 240ml)

  1. 1 onion, thinly sliced
  2. 7 - 8 cloves of garlic, peeled and chopped
  3. 3 - 5 red chillies
  4. 2 tsp coriander seeds
  5. 1 tsp cumin seeds
  6. 7 - 8 curry leaves
  7. 1/4 cup coconut
  8. 1/4 tsp turmeric powder
  9. 1 gooseberry sized tamarind
  10. Jaggery as per your taste
  11. Salt as per your taste
  12. 2 tbsp finely chopped coriander leaves
  13. 1 tsp cooking oil

Ingredients for tempering:

  1. 1/2 tsp mustard seeds
  2. 5 - 6 curry leaves
  3. 1 red chilli
  4. 2 tsp cooking oil

Instructions for making eerulli saaru or onion rasam:

  1. In a pan, heat 1 tsp of oil. Fry red chillies, coriander seeds and cumin seeds until nice aroma.spices for eerulli saaru or onion rasam recipe
  2. Add in chopped onion, garlic and curry leaves.onion and garlic for eerulli saaru or onion rasam recipe
  3. Fry everything together until onions turn slightly brown under medium flame.fried spices for eerulli saaru or onion rasam recipe
  4. Wait until warm and transfer them into a mixie jar. Add the coconut.coconut for eerulli saaru or onion rasam recipe
  5. Grind it into a fine paste.masala paste for eerulli saaru or onion rasam recipe
  6. Transfer the ground masala paste into a container and add in the turmeric.turmeric for eerulli saaru or onion rasam recipe
  7. Adjust the salt as per your taste.salt for eerulli saaru or onion rasam recipe
  8. Add in tamarind extract. Adjust the tamarind as per your taste.tamarind for eerulli saaru or onion rasam recipe
  9. Add the jaggery as per your taste.jaggery for eerulli saaru or onion rasam recipe
  10. Add in required water. I have added around 3 cups (7500ml) of water altogether.water for eerulli saaru or onion rasam recipe
  11. Give a quick mix and bring it to rolling boil. Continue boiling for 2 minutes.boiling eerulli saaru or onion rasam recipe
  12. Switch off the stove and top it with finely chopped corinader leaves.coriander leaves for eerulli saaru or onion rasam recipe
  13. In a small skillet prepare tempering using oil, mustard, red chilli, and curry leaves. Add this tempering to the rasam or saaru. Serve it with hot steaming rice.tempering for eerulli saaru or onion rasam recipe
