Kara kaddi or kara sev recipe explained with step by step pictures. This is a Karnataka style kara kaddi recipe prepared using gram flour, red chili powder, carom seeds and asafoetida. This easy kara kaddi or khara kaddi is also known as murukku. I have posted one more thin kara sev recipe on this website, do check that as well.

Kara kaddi can be prepared in very less time using very minimum ingredients. So when there is a sudden guest at home or if you want something to munch on along with your cup of tea, then this is a perfect recipe to remember. There is another way to prepare kara kaddi, which makes use of rice flour along with gram flour. I will share that recipe also soon. This recipe is from my mother or I would say from my elder brother. Yes...I have written about my brother's interest in cooking in my kesari bath recipe post. Kara kaddi recipe

Preparation time: 10 min
Cooking time: 10 min
Serves: 4

Ingredients: (measuring cup used = 240ml)

  1. 1 cup gram flour / chana dal flour
  2. 1/2 tsp red chili powder
  3. 1/4 tsp carom seeds / ajwain seeds / Oma kalu
  4. 1/2 tsp salt
  5. A generous pinch of asafoetida
  6. 2 tbsp hot oil
  7. Oil to deep fry

Instructions for making kara kaddi:

  1. First sieve the gram flour. In a wide bowl take sieved gram flour, red chili powder, carom seeds, salt and asafoetida. Give a quick mix.ingredients for kara kaddi or kara sev
  2. Add in 2 tbsp of hot oil and mix well again.hot oil for kara kaddi or kara sev
  3. Now sprinkle water little by little and prepare kara kaddi or khara kaddi dough. The dough should be having very thick sticky paste consistency. Or I would say little thinner than soft chapathi dough.dough for kara kaddi or kara sev
  4. Now take kara kaddi mould or murukku mould or chakkuli acchu, with the plate having 3 - 4 holes.mould or acchu for kara kaddi or kara sev
  5. Now fill in the dough in to the murukku mould using a spoon.filling dough in the mould for kara kaddi or kara sev
  6. Heat the oil in a wide frying pan. And press the dough directly in to the hot oil using the mould. Fry under medium flame until the bubbles or sound has stopped.frying kara kaddi or kara sev
