Sabsige soppu akki rotti or rice flour roti with dill leaves recipe explained with step by step pictures and a video. Sabsige soppu akki rotti is a rice flour flat bread and is prepared using rice flour, dill leaves, onion, green chili, coconut and cumin seeds. Sabsige soppu akki rotti or sabbasige soppu akki rotti is a popular breakfast recipe from Karnataka.

I would say this is a very tasty and most flavorful akki rotti since sabbasige soppu (dill leaves) is used. Sabsige or sabbasige soppu (Kannada) is known by diffent names in India like shepu (Marathi and Konkani), savaa (Hindi), soa (Punjabi), Soa-kura (Telugu), Sada kuppi (Tamil), Chathakuppa or Sathakuppa (Malayalam), suva (Gujarati). Akki rotti or chawal ki roti is an instant and healthy breakfast recipe. In Bangalore-Mysore region of Karnataka generally akki rotti is prepared using sabsige soppu or dill leaves. But like any other recipe akki rotti recipe also varies from region to region. Like I have posted malnad style akki rotti and avarekalu akki rotti recipes.

Sabsige soppu akki rotti

Preparation time: 10 min
Cooking time: 30 min
Serves: 3

Ingredients: (measuring cup used = 240ml)

  1. 1.5 cup rice flour
  2. 2 cups water (little more or less depending on rice flour quality)
  3. One small bunch sabsige soppu or dill leaves
  4. 2-4 finely chopped green chilies
  5. 2 finely chopped onions
  6. 1/2 cup grated coconut
  7. 1 tsp cumin seeds or jeera
  8. Salt as per your taste
  9. 1/4 cup cooking oil
  10. 15x20cm sized thick polythene sheet / banana leaf

Instructions for making sabsige soppu akki rotti:

  1. Take water and salt in a big vessel and bring to boil.water for sabsige soppu akki rotti or rice flour roti
  2. Meantime clean and finely chop the ingredients like dill leaves, onion and green chilies. Also keep the grated coconut ready.ingredients for sabsige soppu akki rotti or rice flour roti
  3. When the water starts boiling add in rice flour and switch off the stove. Give a quick mix.rice flour for sabsige soppu akki rotti or rice flour roti
  4. Next add in chopped onions, dill leaves, green chilies, grated coconut and cumin seeds. Mix well using a flat spatula.onion and curry leaves for akki rotti
  5. If required add either water or flour and prepare a soft but stiff dough.soft and stiff dough for sabsige soppu akki rotti
  6. Smear oil on the poythene sheet or banana leaf. Place a tennis ball sized dough on it. Now apply oil to your fingers and start patting the akki rotti using your fingers. Please have a look on the video above.patting karnataka style akki rotti with dill leaves
  7. Keep applying oil to your fingers to avoid sticking. Pat the roti having around 15cm diameter. Make 3 to 4 holes using fingers.how to make karnataka style dill leaves akki rotti
  8. Carefully take out the Akki rotti from the plastic sheet and put it on the hot pan. You have to be carefull as well as quick at this stage otherwise you will end up in breaking the Akki rotti.putting sabsige soppu akki rotti on the pan
  9. Drizzle some oil. Wait for a minute and flip it to cook the other side of the rotti. Serve it hot with butter or curd or chutney. oil for karnataka style sabbasige soppu akki rotti
  10. Please note, if you find difficult to pat the roti, make the dough little soft and pat the rotti or roti directly over the pan. After patting the rotti or roti, then keep the pan on the stove top and cook. You will need at least two pans to alternate.
