Are you bored with regular idlis? Then try these tasty and very soft pumpkin idlis. Pumpkin sweet and spicy idli recipe explained with step by step pictures and a quick video. Pumpkin idli is prepared using grated pumpkin and idli rava (rice rava). The pumpkin idlis are instant idlis as no fermentation is required.

For sweet version, grated pumpkin, jaggery, coconut and idli rava are mixed well and steamed like any other idlies. For spicy version, grated pumpkin, red chili, coconut, ginger, coriander leaves and idli rava are mixed well and steamed like any other idlies.

Pumpkin sweet idli is an age-old recipe and the original recipe makes use of home made rice rava. But now the job is easy because we have everything readily available at shops. This pumpkin sweet idlis are prepared during first day of deepavali or diwali festival (on naraka chathurdashi) in Kundapura and Malnad region of Karnataka.

Pumpkin idli recipe

Preparation time: 10 min
Cooking time: 15 min
Serves: 2

Ingredients for sweet idli: (measuring cup used = 240ml)

  1. 1 cup grated pumpkin
  2. 1/2 cup fresh grated coconut
  3. 1/4 cup jaggery (adjust as per your taste)
  4. 1/2 cup idli rava or rice rava
  5. 2 - 3 tbsp water
  6. 1 cardamom
  7. Salt as per your taste

Ingredients for spicy idli: (measuring cup used = 240ml)

  1. 1 cup grated pumpkin
  2. 1/2 cup fresh grated coconut
  3. 1 - 2 red chili
  4. 1/2 cup idli rava or rice rava
  5. 2 - 3 tbsp water
  6. 1 cm length ginger
  7. Few sprigs of coriander leaves
  8. Salt as per your taste

Instructions for making Pumpkin sweet idli:

  1. To prepare pumpkin sweet idli, take grated coconut, jaggery and cardamom in a mixie jar.coconut and jaggery for pumpkin sweet idli
  2. Dry grind it and transfer it into a wide bowl.ground coconut and jaggery for pumpkin sweet idli
  3. Add in grated pumpkin.ground pumpkin for pumpkin sweet idli
  4. Next add in idli rava and 2- 3 tbsp of water.idli rava for pumpkin sweet idli
  5. Mix it well using hands by pressing gently. Rest it for 5 minutes.mixing batter for pumpkin sweet idli
  6. Grease the idli plates and drop the mixture into the idli plates. Press it gently to give the idli shape.cooking pumpkin sweet idli
  7. Steam it for 12 - 15 minutes. Serve it hot with ghee or honey.cooked pumpkin sweet idli
