It is prepared using thin beaten rice, coconut, rasam powder, salt and sugar. You can prepare this masale avalakki or thin poha for breakfast or for evening snacks.

Avalakki upkari recipe

Preparation time: 10 min
Cooking time: 5 min
Serves: 2

Ingredients: (measuring cup used = 240ml)

  1. 2 cup thin beaten rice or avalakki or poha
  2. 1/2 cup grated coconut
  3. 2 tsp sugar
  4. 1 tsp rasam powder
  5. 2 tbsp finely chopped coriander leaves

Ingredients for tempering: (measuring cup used = 240ml)

  1. 2 cup thin beaten rice or avalakki or poha
  2. 1/2 tsp mustard seeds
  3. 1 red chili
  4. 4 - 5 curry leaves
  5. A pinch of asafoetida
  6. 2 tsp cooking oil

Instructions for making masale avalakki:

  1. Heat oil in a kadai or deep frying pan prepare tempering using oil, mustard seeds, broken red chili and curry leaves. Once it is done, keep it aside.tempering for masale avalakki or spicy poha
  2. Now in another bowl take grated coconut.coconut for masale avalakki or spicy poha
  3. Add in salt, sugar and rasam powder.rasam powder, salt and sugar for masale avalakki or spicy poha
  4. Squeeze and mix it well using hands.mixing coconut and rasam powder for masale avalakki or spicy poha
  5. Add in thin beaten rice (poha) or avalakki. Again squeeze and mix it well using hands.thin beaten rice for masale avalakki or spicy poha
  6. Add in coriander leaves and tempering from step 1.coriander leaves and tempering for masale avalakki or spicy poha
  7. Give a quick mix and serve it. You can also serve it with curd.serving masale avalakki or spicy poha
