Gatti avalakki oggarane or Karnataka style khara avalakki recipe explained with step by step pictures and a video. Gatti avalakki oggarane is a very simple and healthy breakfast recipe. Gatti avalakki oggarane or masala thick poha is prepared using thick beaten rice, onion, tomato and few other spices. Gatti avalakki oggarane is also known as avalakki chitranna.

This is a very easy but tasty recipe. You can prepare this avalakki oggarane or khara avalakki in 15 - 20 minutes. You can prepare this either for breakfast or as evening snacks. I have used 2 cups of thick beaten rice or poha in this recipe, which you can replace it with 3 cups of medium poha. Do try this and enjoy the simplicity of cooking.

Gatti avalakki oggarane recipe

Preparation time: 5 min
Cooking time: 15 min
Serves: 3

Ingredients: (measuring cup used = 240ml)

  1. 1.5 cup thick beaten rice or poha or gatti avalakki (or 3 cup medium beaten rice)
  2. 2 tbsp ground nut or peanuts or shenga
  3. 1/2 tsp mustard seeds
  4. 1 tsp urad dal
  5. 1 tsp bengal gram dal / chana dal
  6. 1 big onion
  7. 1 big tomato
  8. 1-2 green chili
  9. 4-5 curry leaves
  10. 1/4 tsp turmeric powder
  11. 6 - 8 tsp cooking oil
  12. Saltas per your taste
  13. 2 tsp chopped coriander leaves
  14. 1/2 cup fresh grated coconut

Instructions for making gatti avalakki oggarane or khara avalakki:

  1. Rinse and soak 2 cups of thick beaten rice or poha for 10 minutes. If using medium beaten rice or poha use 3 cups and after rinsing drain the water completely and set it aside.thick beaten rice or poha for gatti avalakki oggarane or khara avalakki
  2. Heat oil in a big wide frying pan. Add in ground nuts or peanuts. Fry until peanut starts crackling.peanuts for gatti avalakki oggarane or khara avalakki
  3. Next add in mustard seeds. When mustard seed splutters add in urad dal and chana dal (gram dal). Keep the stove on medium flame.tempering for gatti avalakki oggarane or khara avalakki
  4. When the dal turns brown add in curry leaves and slit green chilies. Immediately add in chopped onion and fry until soft.green chili, onion and curry leaves for gatti avalakki oggarane or khara avalakki
  5. Add in chopped tomato, turmeric powder and fry until soft.tomato for gatti avalakki oggarane or khara avalakki
  6. Drain the water and add in soaked beaten rice or poha and salt.soaked beaten rice and salt for gatti avalakki oggarane or khara avalakki
  7. Mix well close the lid and cook the poha for 5 minutes under medium flame.mixing for gatti avalakki oggarane or khara avalakki
  8. Open the lid and add in grated coconut and coriander leaves. Give a quick mix and switch off the stove. Optionally you can add 2 tsp of lemon juice. Serve it as breakfast or evening snacks and enjoy.grated coconut and coriander leaves for gatti avalakki oggarane or khara avalakki
