Gatti avalakki oggarane recipe explained with step by step pictures and a video. This is a very simple version of avalakki recipe. This simple avalakki or poha recipe is prepared using thick beaten rice, sugar, salt and coconut. This is a very tasty and quick breakfast recipe.

This is a very simple Malnad style gatti avalakki oggarane. I learnt this recipe from my Sister. She learnt it from her Mother-in-law.

You can find one more gatti avalakki oggarane recipe, which makes use of onion and tomato. This is a much simpler and bachelor friendly recipe. The complete preparation takes hardly 10 minutes.

Gatti avalakki oggarane recipe

Preparation time: 10 min
Cooking time: 20 min
Serves: 2

Ingredients: (measuring cup used = 240ml)

  1. 1 cup thick beaten rice/poha/gatti avalakki
  2. 1/4 cup grated coconut
  3. 1 tsp sugar
  4. 1/4 tsp turmeric powder
  5. Salt as per your taste

Ingredients for tempering:

  1. 1 red chili
  2. 1/2 tsp mustard seeds
  3. 2 tbsp ground nut
  4. 1 tsp urad dal
  5. 1 tsp chana dal or gram dal
  6. 7 - 8 cashews (optional)
  7. 1 green chilli
  8. 4 - 6 curry leaves
  9. 2 tbsp cooking oil

Instructions for making simple avalakki oggarane:

  1. To begin with take thick beaten rice or gatti avalakki in a mixer grinder and coarse grind it. Just pulsing it few times will do the job.thick beaten rice for avalakki oggarane or easy poha recipe
  2. Next take ground thick beaten rice or gatti avalakki in a bowl and rinse it. Drain the water and set it aside.coarse ground beaten rice for avalakki oggarane or easy poha recipe
  3. Heat 2 tbsp of oil in a wide frying pan. Add in ground nuts or peanuts and roast it until they start crackling.peanuts for avalakki oggarane or easy poha recipe
  4. Add in mustard seeds, chana dal, urad dal and cashews. Fry until mustard seed splutters and dal turns brown.tempering for avalakki oggarane or easy poha recipe
  5. Next add in red chilli, asafoetida and turmeric powder.curry leaves for avalakki oggarane or easy poha recipe
  6. Followed by add in curry leaves and slit green chillies.curry leaves for avalakki oggarane or easy poha recipe
  7. Next add in rinsed beaten rice. Mix well for few minutes under low flame. Sprinkle water if you find it very dry.making avalakki oggarane or easy poha recipe

  9. At the end add in grated coconut.coriander leaves and coconut for avalakki oggarane or easy poha recipe
