Bellulli chitranna or garlic rice recipe explained with step by step pictures. This is a very simple one pot meal recipe prepared using rice, garlic, coconut, coriander leaves and green chili. Garlic rice is very easy and very tasty. Garlic rice or bellulli chitranna is a perfect recipe to finish leftover rice.

In my family we normally do not eat leftover rice from previous day. It is like that from very olden days. Only required rice is prepared and it will get over on the same day. And in case if it is left over then my Mother used to prepare this garlic rice. May be to help with the digestion. What ever it is..one must taste this garlic rice..it is full of garlic flavor and tastes too good. Please note adding lemon juice is optional and it is left to your choice.

Bellulli chitranna or garlic rice recipe

Preparation time: 10 min
Cooking time: 30 min
Serves: 3

Ingredients: (measuring cup used = 240ml)

  1. 1 cup rice (sona masoori)
  2. 1 medium sized garlic or bellulli
  3. 1/4 cup grated coconut
  4. 1 - 2 green chili
  5. 1/2 tsp mustard seeds
  6. 2 tbsp groundnut or peanut
  7. 1 tsp urad dal
  8. 1 tsp chana dal or bengal gram dal
  9. 1 tsp salt (or as per your taste)
  10. 5 - 6 curry leaves
  11. 2 tbsp finely chopped coriander leaves
  12. 1/4 tsp turmeric powder
  13. 2 tsp lemon juice (optional)
  14. 4 tbsp oil

Instructions for making bellulli chitranna or garlic rice:

  1. Cook the rice and keep it aside. Rice should be cooked well but not mushy.
  2. Peel the garlic, finely chop the big ones and crush the smaller ones.garlic for bellulli chitranna or garlic rice
  3. Now to begin with let us prepare tempering for the bellulli chitranna or garlic rice. Take 4 tbsp of oil in a large frying pan and heat it under medium flame. At first add in ground nuts and fry until they start crackling.ground nut for bellulli chitranna or garlic rice
  4. When the groundnuts crackles, add in mustard seeds, gram dal and urad dal. Fry until mustard seed splutters and dal turns brown.tempering for bellulli chitranna or garlic rice
  5. Add in slit green chilies and curry leaves. Give a quick mix.chopped garlic for bellulli chitranna or garlic rice
  6. Add in finely chopped and crushed garlic pods and fry until garlic turns crisp.chopped garlic for bellulli chitranna or garlic rice
  7. Add in grated coconut, turmeric powder and mix well. Switch off the stove.rated coconut and gooseberry for bellulli chitranna or garlic rice
  8. Add in cooked rice, salt and finely chopped coriander leaves.adding rice for bellulli chitranna or garlic rice
  9. Add in lemon juice. Please note adding lemon juice is optional.adding rice for bellulli chitranna or garlic rice
  10. Mix well using a flat spatula, serve and enjoy.adding rice for bellulli chitranna or garlic rice
