Karnataka style tomato bath or tomato rice or tomato pulao recipe explained with step by step pictures. Tomato bath or tomato rice is a very popular breakfast item from Karnataka. Tomato bath or tomato rice is very tasty, healthy and kids friendly recipe. Tomato bath is an one pot meal and stomach filling rice recipe prepared using rice, tomato, onion and few spices.

Tomato bath or tomato rice is generally prepared in 2 ways. Either by grinding the spices (masala) or by using the spices and powders directly. The recipe explained here is "tomato bath using ground masala" and this tomato bath using ground masala tastes better than the one, which is prepared using powders. This stomach filling tasty tomato bath or tomato rice recipe prepared using pressure cooker. I have posted one more no-onion and no-garlic tomato bath recipe. Do read that also.

Karnataka style tomato bath or tomato rice recipe

Preparation time: 10 min
Cooking time: 30 min
Serves: 3

Ingredients: (measuring cup used = 240ml)

  1. 1 cup rice (I use sona masuri)
  2. 2 big onions
  3. 4 big tomatoes
  4. 1/2 tsp mustard seeds
  5. 2 Star Anise or 1 Indian bay leaf
  6. 1/4 tsp turmeric powder
  7. 2 tbsp chopped coriander leaves
  8. 8-10 tsp cooking oil
  9. 2 cups water (depends on rice quality)
  10. 2 tsp crystal salt (or as per your taste)

Ingredients for grinding: (measuring cup used = 240ml)

  1. 1/2 cup grated coconut
  2. 2cm length ginger
  3. 5-6 cloves garlic
  4. 2 tsp coriander seeds
  5. 1/2 tsp jeera or cumin seeds
  6. 2 - 4 red chilis
  7. 1 finger length cinnamon
  8. 8-10 cloves
  9. 1 cardamom
  10. 1/2 cup water for grinding

Instructions for making tomato bath or tomato rice:

  1. Rinse a cup of rice and keep it aside.
  2. Take all the ingredients listed under "for grinding" and make a coarse paste using 1/2 cup of water. Set it aside.grinding masala for tomato bath or tomato rice
  3. Wash and chop the tomatoes and onions into small pieces. Take oil in a pressure cooker having capacity 5 ltr or more and switch on the stove. Now add in mustard seeds and star Anise or Indian bay leaf.tomato and onion for tomato bath or tomato rice
  4. When mustard seed splutters add chopped onions and saute it. When onions turn soft add in chopped tomatoes. tempering for tomato bath or tomato rice
  5. Add in turmeric powder and salt. Fry for few minutes till the tomatoes turn mushy. Then add in ground spices or masala for tomato bath. Fry the masala for 2 minutes to remove the raw smell of the masala.adding masala for tomato bath or tomato rice
  6. Add in rinsed rice. Add in 2 cups of water or as required (the water quantity should be little lesser than what you use for cooking plain rice). Add in chopped coriander leaves.rice and water for tomato bath or tomato rice
  7. Mix well, close the lid and make 2 whistles. Once the pressure subsides, open the lid and mix or fluff it carefully. Serve tomato bath or tomato rice hot with coconut chutney or salad. You can have tomato bath without any accompaniment also.making karnataka style tomato bath or tomato rice
