Mango dal or mavinakayi dal recipe explained with step by step pictures and a video. Mavinakai dal is a very tasty recipe using raw mango, toor dal, green chillies, onion, garlic and a tempering. Raw mango dal or mamidikaya pappu tastes good with hot steaming rice. Mavinakai tovve or thove is very tasty.

This is a perfect recipe when you are running out of vegetables. Nevertheless it is very healthy, tasty and easy to prepare. Kids will enjoy this simple yet tasty dal. I have used garlic in this recipe which is completely optional and you can skip it.

Mango dal or tovve recipe

Preparation time: 5 min
Cooking time: 20 min
Serves: 2 cup

Ingredients: (measuring cup used = 240ml)

  1. 1/2 cup toor dal
  2. 1/2 cup chopped raw mango
  3. 1/2 tsp mustard seeds
  4. 7 - 8 methi seeds
  5. 7 - 8 curry leaves
  6. 1 - 2 green chillies
  7. 7 - 8 cloves of garlic
  8. Big pinch of asafoetida
  9. 1 onion chopped
  10. 1/4 tsp red chilli powder
  11. Big pinch of turmeric powder
  12. 2 tsp salt (or as per your taste)
  13. 1 tbsp cooking oil
  14. 1 tbsp coriander leaves

Instructions for making raw mango dal:

  1. Peel and chop the raw mangoraw mango for mavinakayi tovve or mango dal recipe
  2. Rinse toor dal. Add required water, chopped mango, pinch of turmeric and few drops of oil.toor dal for mavinakayi tovve or mango dal recipe
  3. Cook until soft by making 3 - 4 whistles. Mash it and keep it aside.cooked dal for mavinakayi tovve or mango dal recipe
  4. Heat a tbsp of oil in a deep frying pan. Prepare tempering with mustard seeds and methi seeds.tempering for mavinakayi tovve or mango dal recipe
  5. Next add in chopped green chillies and curry leaves.green chillies, ginger and curry leaves for mavinakayi tovve or mango dal recipe
  6. Also add in chopped garlic and asafoetida (hing). Give it a quick mix.turmeric powder and asafoetida for mavinakayi tovve or mango dal recipe
  7. Add in chopped onion and fry until onions turn soft.tomato for mavinakayi tovve or mango dal recipe
  8. Add the red chilli powder, give it a quick mix.fried tomato for mavinakayi tovve or mango dal recipe

  11. Bring it to boil and sprinkle corinder leaves. Switch off the stove.coriander leaves for mavinakayi tovve or mango dal recipe
