Khara mandakki or spicy puffed rice recipe explained with step by step pictures and a video. Khara mandakki or khara kadlepuri is a tea time snacks recipe prepared using thin puffed rice, peanuts, roasted gram, green chili, garlic, red chili powder and few other spices. This is a north Karnataka style khara mandakki or spicy puffed rice recipe.

It is best served with a cup of tea. Or just before serving, you can top it with chopped onion, tomato and coriander leaves. Preparing these tasty and spicy khara mandakki or mandakki chivda is very easy.

The weather is plesant now. So this is the best time to prepare this tasty and easy snacks. I am sure kids will love this as their evening snacks. This khara mandakki or spicy puffed rice is very tasty and crispy. It stays crispy for a fortnight, if stored in an air tight container. Avalakki mixture or snacks recipe

Preparation time: 5 min
Cooking time: 15 min
Serves: 3 cup

Ingredients: (measuring cup used = 240ml)

  1. 200 gm mandakki or puffed rice
  2. 3 tbsp ground nuts or peanuts or shenga
  3. 3 tbsp fried gram or roasted gram or hurigadale
  4. 1 tsp mustard seeds
  5. 1 tsp cumin seeds
  6. 1 red chili
  7. 1 - 2 green chili
  8. 5 - 6 cloves of garlic, crushed
  9. 2 tbsp oil
  10. 1 tsp red chili powder (adjust as per your spice level)
  11. 1/4 tsp turmeric powder
  12. 7 - 8 curry leaves
  13. 1 tsp salt (or as per your taste)

Instructions for making khara mandakki or mandakki chivda:

  1. Heat 2 tbsp of oil in a pan. Add in ground nuts or peanuts and fry until it starts crackling.groundnuts for khara mandakki or mandakki chivda
  2. Add in mustard seeds and cumin seeds. In no time mustard and cumin seeds will crackle.mustard and cumin seeds for khara mandakki or mandakki chivda
  3. Next add in broken red chili, slit green chili, curry leaves and crused garlic. Roast them for a while. chili, curry leaves and garlic for khara mandakki or mandakki chivda
  4. Next add in roasted gram or putani and give a quick mix.roasted gram for khara mandakki or mandakki chivda
  5. Add in red chili powder, turmeric powder and salt. Give a quick mix.spices for khara mandakki or mandakki chivda
  6. Finally add in mandakki or puffed rice.puffed rice for khara mandakki or mandakki chivda
  7. Give a good mix for 5 minutes under very low flame. Enjoy crispy and tasty khara mandakki or mandakki chivda.serving khara mandakki or mandakki chivda
  8. Optionally you can top it with chopped onion, tomato and coriander leaves. Serve as per your choice.khara mandakki or mandakki chivda served with onion and tomato
